California LGBT Tobacco Education Partnership
The Brief
The California LGBT Tobacco Education Partnership, a nonprofit funded by the California Department of Public Health, works to reduce tobacco use and strengthen policies across the state. With programs focused on smoke-free Pride events, elected officials refusing tobacco industry contributions, and tobacco-free pharmacy policies, the organization needed three distinct websites to share resources, build credibility, and gather support from health leaders, elected officials, and the public.
Our Approach
We partnered with Project Director Bob Gordon and Project Coordinator Ted Guggenheim to create three modern, easy-to-manage websites:
- Refuse Tobacco Money – a hub for elected officials to pledge against accepting tobacco industry funds.
- Smoke-Free Pride – a platform to support Pride events adopting smoke-free policies.
- Cigarettes and Pharmacies Don’t Mix – a resource center featuring legal briefs and advocacy tools to support tobacco-free pharmacy initiatives.
Each site was built on WordPress with a user-friendly editor, ensuring the team could easily update legislator lists, add event resources, or upload fact sheets without technical hurdles. We streamlined navigation, modernized the design, and built in features for petitions, pledges, and resource downloads.
The Result
The three websites launched successfully, giving the Partnership a professional digital presence that advanced their advocacy goals. Visitors can now access resources, sign pledges, and share support seamlessly. Most importantly, the organization can update and maintain the sites independently—ensuring long-term sustainability for their mission to reduce tobacco use and protect communities statewide.

From the Client
We love Smack Happy. They have been a joy to work with, are as professional as can be, and are extremely knowledgeable about their trade.
We’re gratified that we found Nicole and Natalie. Nicole took the time to get to know us and our project. She presented several options that we hadn’t even thought of, for example coming up with a way to automatically send a beautiful electronic certificate of thanks to each elected official who signs a “no-tobacco-money” pledge with us. Natalie, too, has been a tremendous help. She’s a joy to work with and has been incredibly patient in helping us get the site up and running. She’s so knowledgeable and is an exceptional communicator. We would highly recommend Smack Happy to anyone looking to set up a new site or redesign an existing one.
